On 21st December 2012 Kanjini Co-Op became the legal owners and custodians of a property near Mareeba in Queensland, Australia.
This property had been the Dream community property of several members for over 15 years but it was not for sale until September 2012 and only for a very short time.
After much work, many meetings and negotiations the property was sold to Kanjini Co-Op.
We thank everyone involved for their commitment, diligence and vision in acquiring this magnificent property.
Our aim in managing the land is to maintain or increase its biodiversity in harmony with the natural landscape and habitat.
We consider ourselves to be guardians rather than owners of the land.
We intend to leave it to future generations in a better state.
The property is commonly called 'Adler Hill' after a hill on the property. It is not the highest point but has wonderful views over the southern and western tablelands.
The property is full of superlatives and full of potential. 'Adler Hill' is a 7500 acre former pastoral holding (yes that is thirty square kilometres of land!) within an hours drive from Cairns and its international airport.
Most of the land is hilly to steep (going up to 1100 meters) and backs onto the Wet Tropics World Heritage. While there are some small patches of rainforest on the property, almost all of it is open dry forest. The land surrounds Emerald Creek Falls and it is the first property on this permanent crystal clear creek flowing out of World Heritage. We hold a licence to pump up to 190 megs (millions of litres) of water from Emerald Creek which flows for about three kilometres through our land.
There is the nice big dam which covers about twenty acres, big enough for sailing. There are fish and eels in the dam and sometimes hundreds of ducks and other bird life on it. There is also potential for several more dams on the property and the clean water we can pump from the river would be an asset to a possible aquaculture venture.
There are about 200 acres of good agricultural soils in several areas, from 5 to 40 acres in size. These areas are very well suited to growing a range of organic crops on a variety of soils and aspects (for ourselves and for sale).
As you can imagine there are many beautiful spots all over the property, many with stunning vistas.
We are sure that we will discover much more about this property as we spend more time there.
The Land has:
Emerald Creek rushes out of the rainforest-clad heights of the Lamb Range and down into open eucalypt woodland. Here the waters of the creek tumble over granite boulders, forming the picturesque falls that plunge into placid pools. Bottlebrush trees sprout from between the rocks and smooth-barked water gums lean over the creek.
Emerald Creek is nestled in among the dry sclerophyll forest of Dinden West Forest Reserve. The vegetation is characterised by Eucalypts, Acacias and Grevilleas with some pandanus trees, paperbarks and cypress pines in moister gullies.
